A New Era of Florence and the Machine

One of the most anticipated releases of 2015 is Florence and the Machine’s upcoming album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. The exciting return of the English band came on Feb. 12, when they released the lead single from the album, “What Kind of Man,” and an accompanying music video. This song marks a change in the style of Florence and the Machine. Florence Welch’s haunting vocals are still powerful as ever and the eerie sound of the organ in the beginning seems like no great departure from the band’s earlier work. But the song takes a quick turn in a different direction around the one-minute mark. Heavy with electric guitar riffs and even a horn section, the rock influence is apparent. By the end of the song, you will be singing along to the infectious chorus. The back-up vocals enhance the anthem like nature of the song.
Although it is a change from the group’s previous work, “What Kind of Man” is not a complete transformation. Florence Welch’s voice, backed up by intricate instrumentation, will still bewitch you and leave you wanting more. The song is full of life and intensity; it reaches out from beyond the speakers and captivates the listener. Florence and the Machine has always done an incredible job of producing each song to be its unique story, and “What Kind of Man” proves this. If the rest of How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful is as strong as this single, it is safe to say that the album could be the band’s best yet.
